Now the war for china had began to take its toll on many generals and nobles alike. Supplies where constantly needed and manpower was also required, many had given their life’s in defence of Wu even generals had fallen prey to their wounds they had acquired on the battlefield. Jian Ye for the most part had remained untouched, other than a few small Skirmishes around the region but Jian Ye was one of the most fortified cities in the region. This was due to it was the seat of power for the Wu empire and home of the royal family. Ren use to be innocent but over the years she has taken part in many battles alongside her brothers, even leading one or two of her own now and then. She had also killed more people that she would care to admit openly that is. It was no secret she missed her father more than even her own brothers. He was supposed to watch her grow up, but he was taken from her by a jealous general. Life she has never been as happy as she was when she was with her father. Presently she was sitting within the garden, she had spent many hours their alongside her mother. For her own safety she was still followed by the Wu Royal guard encase someone wanted to harm her

The huge pillar of smoke that had been Chi Bi could not quite be seen, this far away from the field, or should that be river bank, of the battle. The terminoledgy of it should not have mattered to him, but he did like to be correct and thinking about things help him to put it behind him. The engagement had shaken and yet excited Lu Xun down to his very core. They had won the battle alright, that was for certain but.....so many dead. After looking across the battlefield, he doubted anyone in there right mind could have seen it and called it a victory, at least not for China. Cao Cao had lost however and that was what really mattered. The tyrants ambitions had been halted and his humillation had been total, while Cao Cao was master of the north and terror on the land before now his reputation was in tatters. He had crushed Yuan Shao at Guan Du outnumbered 7 to 1 but been defeated by Wu at Chi Bi outnumbering them even more heavily. In the end numbers had meant nothing, only strategy could decided who would rule this land and in that area, Cao Cao was simply outclassed. He had tried to do everything himself, to be war leader, stratagist and prime minister to the Han. He had failed to delegate tasks to others, a mistake Sun Quan while a bit of a mooron had not made. Sun Quan had chosen Zhou Yu to lead his army and what a choice that had proven to be. The genius of Zhou Yu, really was something to behold, as his pupil Lu Xun felt proud to learn from such a man, a true genius.

The memory of the battle was still vivid in his memory even if the smoke was just a blot in the far distance now. In spite of some shock after the battle, he felt proud to have participated. He had assited Zhou Yu with drawing up the plans of attack and been commended for his service as well. Yet more importantly he could simply say he had been their, when the mettle of the men of Wu had been tested and not found wanting. He had been there at the greatest battle the world had ever seen and he had won. He could not quite help but smile, a smile of relief at being alive, a smile of pride in his abilities and those of his friends and a smile because he was bringing good news to the capital....word of victory!

He was riding in a small carriage, a loan from Zhou Yu and was almost at the gates of the capital. His news was urgent so Zhou Yu had asked him to convey it, in spite of his youth. The chief commander himself was of course too busy planning to hunt down Cao Cao and more importantly keeping an eye on Liu Bei. As a junior officer but popular one, Lu Xun had been the natural choice to carry the news. He looked out the carriage window as it past threw the gates, the people in the streets looked at him expecantly and he smiled in responce calling for the driver to stop. Their was no point in keeping the news from them, his guards would talk anyway before he reached the palace so Sun Quan would never be the first to find out at any rate. He reached for the door and pushing it opened slid down into the street. He was dressed today in a light red tunic his hair unusual as it was a mess having not had time to sort it after the battle. He wore a golden bracelet on his left wrist and two short swords that (almost) never left his side. As he jumped down he called to the people who were heading over desperate to hear the news.

"Good people of the southlands, put your fears such as they are to rest. At Chi Bi our cunning cheif commander hoodwinked the tyrant, our generals pulled his pants down, gave him a sound spanking and sent him running home to momma." Lu Xun yelled laughing and he embellished the tale...just a little bit. The people went ecstatic as weeks of fear of invasion was lifted from their shoulders by a few words. Their would certainly be parties in the streets of Jian Ye tonight. As word rippled across the city it would soon reach the palace. Lu Xun decided to walk the rest of the way, he was popular with the people and well known for his kindness towards them, today he felt like basking in the glory...just a little bit.

Shortly he reached the outside of the palace, he would have to walk threw the gardens first however. News of his arrival would not doubt have reached those inside by now. He took a quick look at his outfit, making sure it was free of blood before he arrived. It would not do to greet the rulers of the south lands covered in the blood of Cao Cao's navy. Even if he did smell a bit of smoke.

Ren had only been back in Jian Ye for a couple of hours, her brother was currently away on affairs of state which would mean that she was in the command of the city for the time being.

This was a task that she took seriously if she did not she could very well screw up and lose the city. Her brother had trusted her so she was not about to let him down, for if she did she would lost his trust he has in her.

Many of the Wu generals respected her not only as a princess but also as a fighter. She had been in many battles alongside them, she has even seen her friend’s die in battle just one more casualty of war or so she keeps telling herself. 

Lu Xun was one of her brothers most trusted officers and so Ren respected and had always seen him as a friend of the family. Ren would often find herself lost in her own day dreams of happier times.

Moments later she would snap out of it as someone had informed her that Xun had arrived and wanted to report.

 She simply smiled and then stood up as she smoothed out her dress and waited. She was in command for the moment so she could handle just about anything or so she hoped.

Having arrived just outside the palace Lu Xun was rather expecting to wait in an antee room until he was summoned by Sun Quan...whenever that idiot could be bothered to see him. To be honest Lu Xun did not have the highest opinion of his lord, he loved his land and its people and got along well with almost all the offocials and generals....but...he did not quite feel his lord was the most competent man that had ever lived. In fact he thought it was best that Sun Quan never go into war himself incase he screwed things up. This was an opinion he was smart enough to keep to himself although he suspected Zhou Yu agreed with him. Their former lord Sun Ce had been a different story, he had been a man born to fight, skilled in combat and while hot headed smart enough to listen to wise council. With less than three thousand men he had overcome all the lords of the south lands and claimed this province, an achievement Sun Quan could not match if he lived for a three thousand years. Still at least his lord was wise enough to know his own limitations, that was why he employed men like Lu Xun, to tell him how to defeat his enemies and see that it was done. He studied his nails as he waited, glad that they were at least free of blood, that would be a slight breech of court protocol. Moments later a court aid came out to greet him.

"Young master, Lord Quan is out of the city at this time attending to critical court business. I am afraid i dont know when he will be back." The minister said politely. Lu Xun shook his head disappointed, what a time for his lord to leave the city. They were in the middle of a war, they needed decisive leadership here. Not that his lord would do anything, it was up to Zhou Yu to defeat Cao Cao, or least chase him down now. Still orders needed to be given and supplies redirected so that Zhou Yu could push back the enemy and attack into Jing province. In his opinion to waste time now would be giving Cao Cao a respite he ill deserved. As a military adviser he needed to make sure the right thing got done.

"Thats unfortunate sir, do you know who he left in charge?" Lu Xun asked, not having been in the capital for many weeks, having played an important role in the battle. He had not had time to keep an eye on court intrigue.

"Lady Sun Shang Xiang is in command." The official informed him, Lu Xun was not suprised. In the north a women being left in charge would be considered madness but not in Wu. Lady Sun Shang Xiang was something of a....special case. Lu Xun could not deny that he even had a bit of a crush on her, but he kept that firmly to himself. He nodded at least he knew who he needed to go see now then. He waved the official away and headed toward the palace gardens. After of course setting his hair and making sure he looked presentable. Knowing him by sight the royal guard admitted him, he quickly spotted his lady over by the flowers and headed over to greet her.

"My lady." Lu Xun said politely bowing his head in respect and going down on one knee, sadly crushing an innocent flower in the process. Just at the moment Sun Ren was in charge of the city and thus was his commander under military law, so such respect was expected. As unusual as it was for a women to hold rank, Lu Xun did not mind overly, he was still a junior officer after all despite the talent some saw in him.

Command was something that Ren had grown into. Her father had taught her and even her late brother Ce even took part in her training shortly before he was killed. That was one of worst day for her it hit her as hard as her father’s death had.

But she was a big girl now, she had seen death and stared it in the face more than once. But she still never got over the amount of blood and the sheer number of people she had killed.

She smiled as she watched Xun draw closer but at the same time, she could tell that if he was back that the news might be good or might be bad. But she could smell smoke, had he been playing with fire again

As he reached her she just smiled once again, always pays to be polite to everyone you meet. Even if you know them already but she had never had any one bow to her as he did.

“No wait don’t kneel …..” She looked a little sad for split second  he had just crushed one of father’s flowers. “You.. Crushed it…. That was one of my father’s flowers general.” her tone was not serious but more really that out of all the flowers he had picked that one. She returned the bow and spoke saying.

“Please do not bow, well not in a place such as this please? What can I do for you Lord Xun, my brother is currently away on matters of state? Anything you have to report you can report to me.

Lu Xun winced, if he was at his best he would never have made a mistake like that, but he was far from at his best right now. He had stayed up all night with Zhou Yu planning the details of the attack and of course the night of the battle sleep had been impossible, even afterward exhausted as he had been sleep eluded him, the battle still fresh in his mind. Right now he was getting close to his limits, yet still a soldier of Wu he tried his best to keep the fact from lady Shang Xiang. He only swayed just a tiny amount as he got up from the ground.

He felt sorry for crushing the plant, if it had been her fathers he could understand the significance to her, his own family were almost all dead as well, his father having died when he was just a boy and his uncle slain later by the orders of Yuan Shu. He was well aware of the comfort a few reminders of the lost could bring. Yet he put it from his mind, the situation was still urgent, he blinked as he looked up at his lady and smiled, after all he had good news.

"My apologies princess, that was clumsy of me, its been a while since i saw the palace gardens, for a moment i forgot where i saw." He said, always quick whited and charming even as exhausted as was physically. His tutor Lu Meng had always taught him to do his duty first and never reveal weakness, it was hard but Lu Xun tried to abide by the code his instructors had taught him. He certainly did not want to worry the princess. He stood and brushed the dirt off his fine tunic, as if trying to wipe away his mistake.

"I had expected to report to your brother princess, but matters cannot wait indefinitely for his return." Lu Xun agreed, deciding to deliver his report to her instead. He saluted her instead standing up straight, he still looked at her as his commander for the moment. "My lady chief commander Zhou Yu engaged the enemy 2 days ago at Chi Bi, following a plan agreed to with Zhuge Liang he launched a fire attack against the enemy fleet. Cao Cao having been deceived by the strategist Pang Tong into chaining his fleet together. Huang Gai lead a suicidal attack across the water and rammed fire ships into the enemy setting their fleet ablaze." Lu Xun reported, at this point stopping not quite having the words to explain what he had seen. Unless you had been there to see it for yourself their was no quite understanding the scale of what had happened on the river that day. "It was like nothing i ever seen before, the enemy fleet went up in a huge inferno, the smoke blotted out everything for miles around, like being trapped in a cloud of pure smoke, fire and ash. The only light was the enemy ships as they burned and sank to the water line. The enemy dead....are beyond numbering...it was a slaughter princess. I landed my men on the river bank and we captured the enemy camp, i saw Cao Cao fleeing for his life surrounded by his tiger guard. Wu is save princess....we are all saved." He said finishing simply if dramatically, he could not help but continue to smile, in many ways glad just to be alive...the odds had certainly been against them.

Ren nodded to him once again, she had already forgiven him but he did not need to know that that she had. “ It is fine Lord Xun, you have been gone for many months truth be told the city would appear to be void of life. This war has cost more than my father was ever willing to commit.” Ren use to be a hyper young girl but then she was forced to grow up far too fast, there has been times when she wished that none of this had ever happened. Her father and brother might still be alive if it had not happened."I had expected to report to your brother princess, but matters cannot wait indefinitely for his return.” She paused for a moment a part of wanted to go with her brother but she was ordered to take command of the city instead. My lady chief commander Zhou Yu engaged the enemy 2 days ago at Chi Bi, following a plan agreed to with Zhuge Liang he launched a fire attack against the enemy fleet. Huang Gai led a suicidal attack across the water and rammed fire ships into the enemy. She knew Wu loved playing with fire but to do something so bold it could only be Zhou Yu doing, she could not help but wonder if Gai had survived the attack. “I understand that it was a plan but how many men did we lose.” Ren had always cared about the people of Wu even if at points her brother did not, but she would never question her brother without a good reason.It was like nothing i ever seen before, the enemy fleet went up in a huge inferno, the smoke blotted out everything for miles around, like being trapped in a cloud of pure smoke, fire and ash. I want my family back, I fear that my brother might not know when to stop. A trait he shares with most of us but well done general my brother will be most pleased with this.

Lu Xun nodded solemnly although he was ecstatic to have participated in such a moment in history and happy beyond reason to have won, the human cost of the battle was not a secret to him. He had been charged by Zhou Yu to carry out the count of the dead after the battle and he knew how many families would not see their husbands and sons returning from this campaign. More so he knew that after the battle Zhou Yu would demand to press into Jing and even more men would die, that was just the reality of the situation. Although it upset Lu Xun, he put it at the back of his mind, he cared but by all that was dear to him he would act like he did not...after all one day he might be in command. He was resolved to be as level headed as Zhou Yu when that day came.

"We did lose some good men, i dont wish to upset you princess so i shall not tell you the exact number." Lu Xun said trying to be kind, it was his burden to bare and he did not want to put it in her. She just needed to have a rough idea. "Lets just say compared to Cao Cao our casualties were quite minimal. Huang Gai was badly injured but Han Dang was able to rescue him,  the doctors believe he will live." He added, wanting to reassure the princess..Huang Gai had served 3 generations of her family and would like a uncle to her, or at least that was the impression he had gotten. No doubt that was why the general had volunteered so boldly to lead the fire attack, knowing it was almost certainly a suicide mission.

To Lu Xun's surprise the princess told him that she wished this war to be over, after this battle most of the men were eager for some pay back against Cao Cao. Then again she had suffered more than many in this war...her father then her older brother. It had been Sun Ce who spared his life once...Lu Xun had mourned his death as well. Still he knew all to well how wrong it was to give into that temptation to just stop fighting...he sighed deeply, it brought back some personal memories.

"Princess i know i might be overstepping my place to say this but i feel i must. We cannot allow the loss of friends or family to turn us away from our goals. My uncle Lu Kang thought he could avoid this war, he thought that by sitting out of it he would protect his people. He never attacked anyone and tried to stay true to the Han, thinking it was a kindness. He was wrong...avoiding war does not stop others from attacking you, Yuan Shu came to our city and killed almost every member of my clan. It was only your brother that saved my life. The same now applies to Wu, we are weaker than Wei, so we might fight for every advantage, even if it tears us apart...because if we dont, then we may all die and Wu will be destroyed." Lu Xun urged her knowing that she might not want to continue the war but that in reality they had no choice. So long as Cao Cao wished to rule all the land and Wu wished to remain independent, their was no alternative. Besides after Chi Bi...Cao Cao would never settle for anything else than their heads. It was not his place to lecture his commander and the princess of Wu, but he had always been one to speak his mind.

Ren had to admit his words spoke the truth if Wei turned on them they would be crushed.“I understand what you are saying Mi Lord, I do not wish for Wu to fall to that... that old pervert! I mean he treats women like objects heaven only knows what he would do with me if we forced to surrender to him.” That thought alone would give her nightmares more so then the battles she had taken part in.

Lu Xun nodded in agreement, he truly hoped that the men had died fighting for the right reasons. In times of peace it was said a lord choses his vassles but in times of war, a man gets to chose his lord. He had decieded to serve the Sun family, he still hoped that was the right decision, even if Sun Quan was not his elder brother. Yet he was at least impressed with the freedom and trust Sun Quan showed his advisers, it was more than he would expect from either Liu Bei or Cao Cao...so perhaps in some respects Sun Quan was superior after all. Those men had died for Sun Quan at Chi Bi, Lu Xun had bleed for him too, he really did hope his dreams were worth it, that the dreams of his father and brother than he inherited were worth it as well. Still he was suprised that lady Sun was thinking about those things as well. "Its amazing how open minded you are my lady, you...surprise me." Lu Xun admitted, he was one too never gave praise unless it was deserved. Next the conversation turned towards Huang Gai. He was quite gratified that she wanted to go and see the general, he suspected it would raise his spirits.

"The general was burned quite badly and almost drowned. I suspect he will be sent back here until he can recover, but i am sure he would be grateful for a visit. I know he thinks of you like a niece princess. After all he has done...well he is certainly a true hero of Wu." Lu Xun informed her smiling at the idea of her hugging the poor old man. He doubted Huang Gai would ever be able to fight again, but he kept that thought to himself, not wanting to hurt her feelings. "I hope that one day i might live to serve Wu so well." He admitted, knowing he had yet to really achieve very much. Although it appeared he had done at least some good here today, lady Shang Xiang's will to fight seemed at least to have been restored. She would no doubt be back to her fiery self soon.

"Trust me princess that decrepit flesh sucking maggot would have to fighting his way threw the whole Wu army to lay as much as a finger on you, to say nothing of your brother." Lu Xun laughed reassuring her that she was very popular with the soldiers. Many of whom were inspired by the princess more martial skills. "I will do my best as well of course." He added as a an after thought. Despite his seeming humility he was very confident in his own abilities.

She said it was also one of reasons that she fell in love with my father. She was lucky enough to have inhered the traits of both her father and mother. Something her brothers missed out on, not that she would ever tell them that, one was dead and one had an empire to run The general was burned quite badly and almost drowned. I suspect he will be sent back here until he can recover, but i am sure he would be grateful for a visit. I know he thinks of you like a niece princess. She nodded to him it was nice to know that she had protection but she would be more willing to surrender if it spared the life’s of the people of Wu. That was one of her major flaws she feared for the people far too much.

Not that it could be helped...after the flames at Chi Bi, he would smell of smoke for quite a while. He doubted any amount of bathing would rid him of it entirely. Besides there were more important things afoot that him smelling like a bomb-fire. "I agree princess, master Zhou Yu taught me to always be through right with others our lord in particular. Even if he does not like what i tell him, i will always give him my honest opinion. I fear too many at court prefere to instead tell your brother only what he wants to here...or what would benfit themselves rather than our kingdom." Lu Xun said thinking with more than a little anger about those who had urged surrender before the battle at Chi Bi, a bunch of cowards and sycophants.

"In fact my lady the chief commander also sent me here to deliver a heartfelt request to your brother. Having defeated Cao Cao at Chi Bi, he seeks permission to cross the river and drive him out of Jing province." Lu Xun told her, knowing that she would have to get the ball rolling while her brother was indisposed. One of the reasons Zhou Yu had entrusted him with this mission in fact was to help persuade Sun Quan to let him take the fight to the enemy. Jing province was one of the most critical points in the entire land and chief commander had long had his eye on it. There were also issues involved but Lu Xun was not sure how much detail it would be best to go into. Lady Shang Xiang might be in command at the moment but she was still his lords little sister. He doubted that lord Sun Quan wanted her too involved with this war. Certainly not after what had happened to his father and brother. Lu Xun might not respect his lord but that did not mean he did not look out for his lords best interests. He had sworn loyalty to Wu and that meant something to him.

"I owe your brother a great deal my lady. When your elder brother died, Sun Quan offered me high rank and has since shown great trust in me, often asking me for advice. Considering my age and experience he has shown me a great deal of trust, far more than i could have expected. I feel greatly indebted to him." Lu Xun admitted, he often had cause to doubt some of his lords decisions but as long as his lord continue to rely on the advice of himself and masters Lu Su and Zhou Yu, Wu would always be well looked after. Being able to take advice from others was a skill rarely considered to be a sign of greatness, but it made Sun Quan a wiser ruler than either Liu Bei or Cao Cao. Still Lu Xun was conflicted about whether or not he should tell lady Shang Xiang what he was thinking right now. For the moment it was a question of personal loyalty...towards his lord Sun Quan or his teacher Zhou Yu. He was well aware that Zhou Yu was a brilliant man while Sun Quan was mediocre, but that did not mean all Zhou Yu did was right. Now he believed that whether Sun Quan ordered it or not....Zhou Yu would attack Nan An and fight Cao Cao for Jing province. The question was should he tell this to lady Shang Xiang. Either way it seemed like betrayal of one friend and master.  He decided for the moment not say too much, Sun Quan might well agree anyway and he did not wish to speak ill of his teacher. Lu Xun held his peace and kept quite as Lady Shang Xiang explained how she saw things. Her views were more or less the same as his, although perhaps a little more optimistic. He preferred to expect the worst, that way he was presently surprised when things turned out well. Besides as a strategist, if you could not predict the worst that could happen and prepare for it, you were not doing your job. While as a ruler it was lady Shang Xiang's job to express confidence to ensure the people felt that their leaders were doing a good job. It was he had decided long ago for a large part...a pretense of confidence but he understood the reasons for it. "Very good my lady." He said in agreement as they entered the throne room.

He was not so sure however that he agreed with her when she told him to accept his place and just do what he could for the kingdom and her brother. He was above all others thing a young man with exceptional talents. This tended to breed two traits...arrogance was the first, which he was usually able to disguise well. The other was of course...ambition. Lu Xun's was for his family, which had all but been destroyed in this war. Before they had been among the most powerful houses in Jiang Dong but that had changed. Lu Xun was determined to see his house restored, to their former glory. Sun Ce had promised him once that he would see that done...but Sun Ce was dead and his family did not know the promise even exsisted. So Lu Xun simply sighed and nodded his head. He didnt want favors, just a chance to prove himself once day when he came of enough age and experience.

It was her sworn duty to and she would never be content with being just a lady of Wu. Sadly her father was unable to see her grow into the fine young women that she had become.

If her father was still alive how different it would be then it is now. She would often visit her father’s grave when she was able to, but with the current state of affairs going out on one of her day trips was not the smartest idea. It is not like there are any generals that she can take with her right now.

Lu Xun bowed, knowing the audience was over he headed toward the doors. At last he might get some sleep tonight.
