A place that was once home (Sun Renxian)

A week ago Yuuji had been called into the Han Special Defense Forces (HSDF) main office, a small building that was official on the records used as a store house for documents. The sort of boring cover that ensured no one was ever interested enough to look past the outside into what really happened their. His superiors did value the secrecy surrounding their off the books government assassination bureau. Once he was inside Yuuji had been given his latest mission, one that had taken him far away his post in the capital Luo Yang, all the way back down into the southlands.

This morning Yuuji was sitting in something of a makeshift camp he had constructed last night, a small tent just large enough for his needs was half concealed under a near by tree. While his horse was tied up to the same tree to prevent any escape attempts. A bag filled with basic supplies was pressed up against some rocks nearby while Yuuji sat over a small cooking pot he was using to brew his morning tea. He was used to living rough and in bad terrain so too him, this was actually quite comfortable living still. On this particular morning his camp was set up in the woods near Chai Sang.

This place was also very near to his hometown of Lu Kou. Frankly if it had been Yuuji's choice, he would have never come within 100 miles of that place again. Sure it had been his home until he was 10 years old and he had some good memories of this place as well. Memories of his sister and the time he spent with the local governors daughter a sweet young girl. Unfortunately the good memories were buried under a sea of the bad, his abusive farther, his weak willed mother who could never protect him and the death of his beloved big sister. Still a mission was a mission and the ghosts of his past were no concern to his superiors. As Liu Yu his direct superior would say in that annoying tone of her's "Just put up with it and get the job done." as he intended to do. And people wondered why he had a problem with pushy women...They had clearly never meet Liu Yu.

As to why he was here in the first place, his mission was to eliminate the leader of a local group of bandits who had been fomenting unrest somewhere around here. Apparently the HSDF considered him a potential threat to regional security. As well as to the safety of the local people. Yuuji certainly wasn't expecting to meet anyone else here, this forest was usually only used for hunting by members of the Sun clan.

Now Xian might be the crown princess of Wu and stands to inherit the throne if something happens to both her brothers, which doubtful unless someone somehow kills both of them at the same time. But the guard around the royal residence was as tight as if the emperor himself was visiting. But it was not like Xian was banned from leaving the castle she always had her maids with her plus a group Wu soldiers.

She trusted her maids with her life, but it did help to have some soldiers with her maids could fight but they trained to protect Ren and not go running off into battle. Hence why she has a squad of Wu elite soldiers to carrying the banners of the Wu family and the other five with spears and swords. She trusted them as much as she did her own maids, but they were there to protect and die for her. She made sure they knew that and each one of them swore to protect her even if resulted in their deaths.

Now the lands around her father’s region were one of best places to come if you wanted to hunt or to simply take the day off which is the sole reason that Xing was out. She had left a note for her father and brothers, telling them what area she was going to and where to look for her if she failed to return home. Not that she would get lost or anything she knew this whole region like the back of her hand, she had to she was one of Sun clan and this was her home.

Xian and her maids were all mounted with the flag bearers and the soldiers that were following her. One flag was at the front the other was at the back, it’s not how she would have done it but her father had always told her to listen to more solid captain if anything was to happen to her well she was out riding. She smiled as she looked ahead as she was riding towards her destination, she had the soldiers with her as she knew that bandits tended to roam the woods and she really did not feel like getting into it with them.

Moments later her party would arrive at the location that she was taken to by her mother as a child, not much had changed but something did not seem right. Maybe it was that she last came here when she was a child and now that she’s an adult it did not hold the same appeal as It did when she was a child. Once they reached the clearing the party came to halt as they spotted a small camp and what appeared to be a Han Solider, but what would an be doing this far out and this deep within her family’s lands.

At first, she felt like moving on, but if he was indeed a Han soldier then he should have some kind of proof, and Ren was not about to take any chances as her party slowly began to ride up to the camp in question. For all, she knew he could be bandit just dressed like a Han soldier and if that was the case he wouldn’t leave this camp alive that’s for sure. But if he did turn out to be a member of Han then she would have to ask what he was doing in her father’s lands. The guards where now clearly ready to defend there princess and her maids where already looking around for any hidden bandits.

It took Yuuju only seconds to notice Sun Ren and her retinue as they approached his makeshift camp. That was only natural of course, given his profession if his senses were not razor sharp he would have been long dead by now. There was no such thing as a careless assassin, only a dead one. What was it his master had used to say…oh yes “If you let the enemy surprise you, then you deserve to die.” The meaning was of course obvious, never let your guard down.

As soon as he noticed them Yuuji grabbed his bow from where he had left it just inside his tent to protect it from the rain the previous night. Taking hold of it and his quiver of arrows he performed a combat roll moving fluidly into position. He was lying down in what was called ‘prone position’ just behind a large tree root. The result was that he had a perfect line of sight on the enemy while only just the top of his head was visible. Now he had an optimal firing position he started reaching for an arrow, until the convoy riding toward him got close enough for him to read the characters on their flags. Once he realized they were not bandits he let his arm fall back down, releasing the arrow he had been about to notch into his bow. He could not have taken down so many foes anyway of course. But if he had made it sufficiently painful for them, there was always a chance they would have backed off. Fortunately, it seemed that would not be necessary today, good he didn’t enjoy killing anyway even if it was his single skill. Yuuji pushed himself off the ground brushing the dirt off his armour or should that be his disguise? As he waited for the convoy to arrive at his little camp.

It was only as they were about to arrive that Yuuji was able to get a better look at them, he noticed then that many of them were women. In fact the person in charge seemed to be a women lady. At least judging from the way she moved and the way the others were keeping a protecting stance around her Yuuji got the strong impression she was in charge. He tended to be a very observant young man when it came to the little details like that. It was part of what made him such a deadly foe to deal with. Of course when he noticed he was dealing with yet another powerful woman it set off alarm bells in his head. ‘Oh great another one’ he thought as he let out a long sigh. It seemed he must have done something terrible to women in a previous life to have been cursed like this. No matter where he went in life there was another women waiting to boss him around. Even here miles away from Liu Yu and her constant scolding. Not that he had any particular problem with women, it was just having dealt with more than a few strong willed ladies in the past, he was justifiably cautious around them.

As they arrived at his camp he made sure not to make any aggressive moves, keeping his hands off his sword as he set his bow back down against the tree. “Good morning my lady?” Yuuji called out as he made a stiff rather awkward bow. Of course he knew how to bow properly but most soldiers didn’t and he made sure to stay in character. “I really didn’t expect to see anyone all the way out here? What can this humble soldier do for you?” He asked wanting to take charge of the conversation and force her to reveal her purpose here if at all possible. The more information he had the easier it would be to work out how best to play this. He probably didn’t need to be quite that cautious but he was the type that was naturally suspicious when meeting new people.

This was not the first time Xian had been forced into a position where she was forced to meet new faces, sure most of the people she had met visited her in Jian Ye. But now she was couple days ride from Ye so if something happened all she had was her wits her maids and the soldiers she brought with her. But it still made her wonder why someone was this far out and dressed like a Han soldier to boot. Surely if Han were passing through her families lands they would have been made aware of that fact.

Then again maybe he was lost or was part of a bigger army that was passing through her families lands. Even so, why would Han army be matching though Wu; as far as she knew her family has been loyal to Han empire for as long as she could recall. But for the moment she was willing to see what his reason was for being here, if he was part of the bigger army then Xian would be speaking to the officer leading them as to why they within her families lands without sending advanced notice.

Her maids began to fan out looking for any signs of others that might be hidden most of her maids knew how to track as they have had to track Xian down when she sneaks out of the castle to do whatever it is she does when she sneaks out. The s soldier that were with her dismounted as they began to walk in front of her horse in protection like stance. Good morning my lady? “I really didn’t expect to see anyone all the way out here? What can this humble soldier do for you?
Well at least he was polite but something did not sit right with her, he did not act or compose himself as a member of Han army should. Then again if things turned out bad she was ready for it. She simply looked around as she patted the front of her horse and glared down at the boy in front of her. “Good morning to you too. But I’m going to ask you one question. Why  are camped in Wu's lands. You may be dressed like a Han soldier but the way you carry yourself tells me otherwise. So choose your next words wisely; as they could be your last.” Her maids by this time were ready to attack and the guards were looking for any reason to attack the boy.

Yuuji’s face was calm betraying no hint of a reaction, he had been in some very tense situations before so he was not going to crack under pressure. Or torture for that matter, his training had prepared him for that as well. He didn’t react either when the maids went to look for tracks around his camp. While it certainly might have been a good idea under normal circumstances to send a larger force. After all group of rebels he had been sent to deal with were not insignificant. The HSDF didn’t tend to work with large groups, it was too small an organization and its agents too spread out. Besides Yuuji himself almost always worked alone.

As the women in charge spoke to him he could not help but think he really was cursed, he had known it somehow the moment he spotted her. Another pushy woman, why was this only sort of women he ran into? Why was he cursed to spend his life in service to the whims of pushy women? Worse this one seemed pretty sharp as well, she was already picky away at his disguise. She didn’t really seem to buy that he was, who he said he was. Well what should be do next? He was supposed to lie of course but that wasn’t really Yuuji’s style honestly. His master had once given him these words of wisdom and he had come to live by them. “Always try to avoiding lying, the more you lie the more everything starts to look like black.” In other words, the more you lied the worse things tended to get. He had found these words to be quite wise. So he decided not to lie to her, instead he would tell her as much of the truth as he could, given the situation. This seemed especially wise given he was dealing with a women who seemed quite perceptive, having already sensed their was something not quite right about him. She had good instinct's, just like he did.

“I am actually here under orders from the government in Luo Yang my lady. Perhaps that is why my attitude seems strange to you, things in the capital are a little different.” Yuuji said which for the record was all true, he was here on orders from the capital and things were a little different there. Which was probably why his routine was a little off, better not try and adjust now though, it was already too late, he would just have to remember for next time. “I have here documents from the court that prove my identity, if you will allow me.” Yuuji said very slowly reaching into his pocket so as not to alarm anyone before pulling several documents. Orders from the capital that had been stamped with the appropriate seal. The HSDF had no problems getting their hands on court seals, as they were part of the government’s structure, even if their existence was a closely guarded secret. He handed over his documents for inspection, he always carried these things when he left the capital, they allowed him to pass military check points without trouble. So they were considered standard issue for a HSDF operative on a mission.

“My name is Captain Kazami Yuuji, at your service.” He said bowing again just as awkwardly as before. He was again of course telling the truth, his rank was indeed captain and he was an indeed a soldier. He was just outside normal chain of command working for a black ops organization. He look up at her and smiled, a fake smile of course but his master had always told him it was better to smile, it tended to reassure people and put them at ease. Although that tactic had never worked on any of the other pushy women in his life…come to think of it.

Xian was beginning to get an understanding of just who this boy really was. Now she could have left him alone but she felt the need to undercover why he was here even if he was telling the truth about who he was and who he works for. She was a Princess so if anything was to happen to her, then her family would have no choice but to give into the demands that were demanded her return. She knew they would but she would want them to carry on as Xian could not live with herself if anything happened to her family because of her.

The soldiers that were with her still refused to let their guard down. She might not be as good in battle as her brothers, but she had the respect and love of the people. And that was better than being a master at war, being if she ever became ruler she would have the support of common people and that was more powerful than any army ever was. She simply nodded to her maids to stand down but not to fully stand down just enough to not scare the boy but enough to attack if it came to it.

“I am actually here under orders from the government in Luo Yang my lady. Perhaps that is why my attitude seems strange to you, things in the capital are a little different.” She looked to him once again a part of her was beginning to believe that he was telling the truth, after all, he had no reason to lie or was in a position to do so. “Suppose that makes some sense, But even if you are telling the truth it just seems weird that you're from Luo Yang. But I have not been back there in years, I cant stand the constant in-fighting and how corrupted that city has become.

Xian knew what was going on with the court as she had noble friends who attended it, and they quite often kept her informed of events that happened within the court. Is one of the reasons she avoided that place like it would kill her.“I have here documents from the court that prove my identity if you will allow me.” She nodded as one of the guards walked over to verify the seal even though she knew it could be faked she had to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

“My name is Captain Kazami Yuuji, at your service.” “ suppose It would be rude not to return the favour. Ren or Xian, Crown Princess of Wu and heir to the throne after my brothers of course. I don’t know if your telling truth as that might be an official seal but money can buy you anything in the capital. She nods to the guards to stand down, however, her maids pretty much refused as she knew they would. You're in the presence of Royalty Captain, so I would expect a soldier most of all a captain to conduct himself as such.”

Just a little of the tension went out of Yuuji’s body as the guards began to relax, even if the maids kept their guard up around him. He was not really sure what was with that yet, armed maids? It was really quite unusual to see women armed to begin with yet here was the noblewomen wearing a sword surrounded by maids who quite frankly looked more serious than her guardsmen. Although come to think of it, he had heard a rumour about something similar at court not too long ago. What was it…oh yes he had overheard some fancy noble ladies who didn’t look like they had two brain cells to put together gossiping about this. Apparently some noble women in the southlands actually ordered her maids to learn how to fight and was something of a little warrior herself, the ladies in Luo Yang seemed to consider the whole idea quiet scandalous. Although Kazami Yuuji thought it more ‘prudent’ he knew all too well that the world didn’t have mercy on someone just because they were female. It had certainly not saved his big sister; the real world was at its core a pretty damn terrible place.

This noblewoman or as he still thought of her, that pushy women went on to explain she had not been to the capital for a while, due to the corruption it had sunken into. He could understand that perspective, it was obvious to someone who saw as much as he did that things were getting worse by the day. However, he didn’t see much that he could do about it, except hope his superiors were on the right side of things. After all it’s not like he had much choice other than to follow orders. “Yes I am a little far from the capital. Orders are orders though and someone like me has little choice but to do as they are told and go where they are sent.” Yuuji explained, which would probably not come as a surprise, dressed as he was like Han military. With the proper seals, not that they were likely to check given the distance between here and the capital.

As she introduced herself, he realized his hunch had been right, if she claimed to be princess of Wu, that would make her family name ‘Sun’ and if her given name was ‘Ren’ that matched the noblewomen he had heard about. Not that the title princess meant too much really, it would be an inherited title from some ancestor of her’s having been made a prince under the Han dynasty. Normally Yuuji was the sort of rude person who would ignore such honorifics but given the situation. Well he was no fool, he knew to play ball for the moment. As Liu Yu would tell him “A little manner's never hurt when speaking to women Yuuji.” Damned he hated it when she was right.

“You’re wise to be cautious Princess, these are pretty dark times after all. However, I am actually here to do you a favor. You see I am here to scout the location of a group of rebels the court believes might cause trouble in future. That’s why I am here alone, a large group of soldiers tends not to go unnoticed.” He explained, he was not after all forbidden from explaining his mission or getting help in completing it and since this seemed beneficial to the local rulers, that would be her household? Well it would certainly be better than working at odds with her.

Xian did not know much about her family line past that of her mothers and fathers. She knew that she was a princess by birth and not just because someone in the past was royalty, but at the same time she was not what you would expect for a princess to be. In fact, she only ever acts like a Princess when she is attending court or ruling in her brother’s stead. But even then she was the princess that would make other princesses question If she really was one.

But is not like she cared what others thought about her, as long as her family loved her the rest of haters can go burn in hell for all she cares. But for now she was planning to find out if this boy was indeed a threat to her family or to her, but so far he is acting as if he understands who he is talking to but could she really be sure that he was not just flat out lying to her face. Never the less he was out manned and Ren really did not want to kill member of an army even if he was alone.

“Huh rebels well surely if that is the case this is my family’s lands so if I am correct that means rebels should be taken back to Jian Ye and not to Luo Yang. You might be on Han orders but even you don’t have authority or right to change how the regional lords rule their regions am I not correct.?” She simply nodded to her unit to stand down as the guards returned to their positions behind Xian. well her maids began to do what they always do spread out and become one with the forest around them as two of them stood beside Xian “ forgive me being on guard but if Your with Han suppose you well within your rights to be here.

Yuuji tried to keep the fake smile in place as they kept talking, things were going in the right direction even if he did find the way she interrogating him pretty annoying. Of course he could be a damn difficult person to deal with himself even on the best of days, so it was possible the irritation wasn’t entirely one sided. At least it looked like he would probably get some cooperation with his mission at this rate, he did prefer to work alone but it just might make the job easier. After all, really he just needed to get into range of his target then…at that point it should take only a single shot. He didn’t even mind giving these state troops the credit, all the better that no one looked into the activities of Kazami Yuuji or remembered his name.

The ‘princess’ had gotten down from her horse at least now but Yuuji still was careful not to approach her or make any quick movements. He was still trying to win some trust here. “Forgive me for being frank but to be perfectly honest your highness the imperial military does not care if the rebels are dragged back to Luo Yang or to Jian Ye. Command simply wants the situation resolved before they can take any action against the national interest. If you wish to take them back to Jian Ye, then please do as you wish. These are your lands.” Yuuji responded not really feeling the need to cause a dispute here between the locals and the Han government. Especially since once this was over the government would want to be free to denying any knowledge about these events. He also didn’t really intend to take prisoners either; he was here for just one man after all. The rebel leader was his target not the entire group, whatever happened to the others after that…was not his concern. “If you wish to assist the military in this matter of course, I would certainly welcome the help?” He added, having got the distinct impression she was not going to just walk away anyhow.

Command simply wants the situation resolved before they can take any action against the national interest. If you wish to take them back to Jian Ye, then please do as you wish. These are your lands.” He made some valid points, but in her eyes It was only right that Wu dealt with the bandits and not the Han.

“How about this? You can have the soldiers but the leader you leave in my custody; my father would expect me to bring back the leader alive anyhow. No doubt he will be put to death but my brother will decide his fate if we are able to catch him that is.” She nodded to her guards to begin unpacking her equipment that she had brought in case she had to spend the night which is quite often what she does.

Now Xian had left Jian Ye in a hurry and there for forgot to have lunch, meaning that she had to bring some with her which she brought from a passing trader on the way to the forest that she is currently in. “ Have you eaten yet? I mean was unable to eat as I left Ye in a hurry. So I brought some with me.?” Ren could cook if she had to her mother and taught her and she did cook for her brothers now and then. " Your welcome to share it with me if you like."

She smiled as her guards began to start setting up her camp setting up banners, to begin with then moving on to the tent it would take some time for them to fully assemble it, so this was a good time to get to know who she just invited to lunch. Hell, who knows maybe things will work out and they may part friends or Xian ends up punching one of Hans soldiers. Would not be the first time she hit someone even it was only training

The idea of leaving the leader and taking the rebels back to Luo Yang instead was certainly awkward for Yuuji. Not only did he have no use for them his orders were quite specific even if he didn’t know the reason this person was wanted dead, except he was supposed to be dangerous. Sure if Sun Quan executed him it was fine, but then Yuuji would have to wait around to make sure it really did turn out that way. Fortunately, he had a perfectly sensible objection to raise. “Your highness as you can see I am just one officer, out here alone. There is no way I could escort so many prisoners the hundreds of miles between here and Luo Yang. Neither do I have the authority to summon state troops to help me escort them back. On the other hand, if I bring the leader back in chains, I can show him to the court and they will certainly believe the situation is settled, not needing to send anyone else here to bother you.” Yuuji explained thinking quickly on his feet. If she didn’t go with it he would have to come up with something else later down the line. You didn’t just fail a mission for the HSDF.

As they talked he noticed her men starting to set up something of a small camp of their own, he was just wondering why they were doing so when the princess asked him if he had eaten yet. The truth was that he hadn’t had a chance yet, after waking he had spent much of the morning scouring the area for tracks that might lead him to his target. He had just found some tracks and then headed back here to make some tea when Sun Ren and her entourage had arrived on the scene. Of course his own food consisted of hard military rations, which might seem a little dire but they were filling and he had never minded them. Probably as he had grown up in something of a ‘food poor environment’ especially the year he had spent living with Liu Ye, that women somehow couldn’t even cook rice properly. He was a little surprised when Lady Renxian asked him to join him for a meal. She seemed to be being a little friendlier towards him now and honestly he had no reason to refuse. Anything she had brought was bound to be better than the rations he had with him. “yes, thank you your highness, I think I will take you up on that. If we run into the rebels this might be my last meal after all.” Yuuji said thinking i might also not be a bad idea to get to know her a little better while he had the chance. If they could smooth out any differences they had things would only go easier later on. Besides even though this place held mixed memories for him, she was still part of the family that ruled over his homeland.

Why did he want to take the leader back to Luo Yang so badly one could say that he was not being totally honest with her? But if that was the case would it not be better to let her have her way as to maintain the ruse or whatever it was he was trying to hide from her. But she had no way of knowing right now so all she could do was give him the benefit of the doubt and watch his actions.

Answer me something Captain. Why are you so hell bent on dragging the leader back to the capital? She simply nodded to guards as they were just about done with her tent, sure it was much bigger then the boys was. But she was a princess so her tent would always be better as she had the money to buy and live how she wanted to. Even if used that money to help the people of her father’s kingdom. Just as the soldiers were done setting up the camp her maids returned with dinner. It was a couple of deer and Xian loved deer; something about the taste of it reminded her of her childhood.

“As always my maids know what I need without me needing to tell them. You want to know something. Well, each one of the women that you see has been trained and groomed since childhood to be my maids and my protection, some of them are children of nobles; some or from the street I took them in taught them how to read how to fight and gave them a place to live and train. And over that time the bond, we have formed is reflected in how they protect me.” 

She began to make her way over towards the tent that was fully build as two of the maids walked inside to stand guard well the soldiers took position outside of the tent well the others began to prepare dinner. Ren was planning to share her dinner with her Soldiers, its one of reasons they respected her as she did not treat them just like Soldiers. maybe that was why men where always wanted to protect her.

Ironically Yuuji would have quite liked to know the reason he was after this man himself but of course naturally Liu Ye had decided he didn’t ‘need to know’ there for he had not been told. Normally he would have been told, she didn’t usually keep things from him, so either she had not been told herself of the reasons were ‘dubious’. Quite possibly this was little more than political assassination, he did have some suspicions of his own. He didn’t really want to think about the possibility but…even the people who ran HSDF were not immune to the corruption of the capital. It tainted everything like a poison slowly making its around the body until eventually it died.

Frankly it was hard there for, to come up a good reason why he ‘needed’ to get a hold on the man. His only recourse left was to play the ‘good solider boy’. “I wish I could tell you why the court wants him your highness, I am more than a little curious myself as to the exact details. However, I am just a soldier you understood and I was told this was on a ‘need to know’ basis. Apparently I didn’t need to know.” Yuuji told her hoping she would just let it go at that and go along with it to save herself any trouble. Unfortunately, if she was as much like Liu Ye as he suspected she was…she might not mind a little trouble every now and then. But then he was really running out objections he could make before it became down right suspicious. These women really were going to be the death of him one day.

In the meantime, her guards seemed to have prepared a tent, quite a luxurious one but then she was a noblewomen and seemingly an important one at that. Also to be fair, he only appeared ‘poor’ now because that was part of his disguise. His job did come with an exceptionally generous salary from the government, mostly because no one else could do the things he did. If he wanted too he could probably buy a title of nobility for himself, he just didn’t care about such things. What was the use in a title anyway? He was just pondering that as the maids arrived back with the meal.

As he followed her inside the tent he realized she actually intended to eat with the soldiers, now that caught him off guard. He only realized then she had not be joking when had just explained the bond between her and the maids that accompanied her. Frankly he had been sceptical to say the least, but her actions did seem to be backing up her words. He didn’t really want to admit it but…he really quite respected that attitude, so dissimilar to the people he had known threw out his life. He didn’t want to complain about his life and he certainly didn’t want anyone’s pity but…he could not say he was used to being treated as well. Was he actually starting to like this fiery woman who seemed determined to get in the way of his mission? He bit his lip for just a moment his friendly mask slipping as he glared around the trend like this was all somehow wrong and they were the weird ones. But it was just a moment, before his fake smile returned and he sat down.

“You know your highness; you are not really very much like the noblewomen I have known in the capital. I mean that as a compliment of course. Although perhaps it’s just a southern thing, the ruling family of my hometown were quite kind I suppose.” Yuuji said trying to make a little small talk before they ate. He certainly didn't want to blow what little trust he had managed to build so far.

She simply nodded to the men who were preparing lunch as they knew that that would be sitting at the same table as Xian and Kaz, but that was out of respect for them and to show them that she cares for them as much as she does her own maids. She simply took a seat at the table as she placed her bow on the stand beside her as she looked over to soldiers who also joined her as she could smell the food that would soon be ready.

He was not about to admit it but Yuuji had actually been in the Emperor's presence before. That might seem strange given his peasant background and frankly insolent attitude but the organization he worked for held a lot of political power. So it was he had been dragged in with his superior Liu Ye a few times to meet the old man. She was he understood a niece of the Emperor's as well as been his legal guardian and superior in the organization. Although the few times Yuuji had been dragged in the Emperor Ling's presence...well he had not been overly impressed. One tended to think of the Emperor as some kind of almost divine presence but the truth was quite the opposite. Yuuji's impression of the man was that Emperor Ling was extremely disinterested in actually ruling his Empire. The man spent all his time drinking, eating and flirting with women far younger than he was, while the Eunuchs attended to all state matters. Was it any wonder really that the Imperial court had become totally corrupt when it's master never even bothered to look up from his bed to see what might be going on? Naturally no 'captain' could know about these things so Yuuji kept his trap shut about it.

Why did he stay...probably because of a sense of duty and his loyalty to Liu Ye even if she was a damned annoying pushy women. She was still the closest thing he had left to family in this world

He sat down at the table as well waiting for the meal to be ready, it smelled quite good at least if this was his last meal it should be a decent one. Certainly better than his rations. As Lady Ren mentioned her parents he felt just the smallest twinge deep inside himself, family was a some what taboo topic around him. "No offense taken you're highness, i am originally from the south myself. I only moved to the capital later on. I should certainly think you're parents proud though, you look like you could fight at least as well as soldiers i have known in my time." Which probably seemed a some what strange comment given his age, but then he had started fighting very young.

Any feelings that Xian had on the Han empire she kept to herself, not only as she did not want to make it seem like the south did not care or gave a shit about the emperor or his rules. And she really did not want to be the reason for Wu getting cut off and being left to fend for themselves. Sure they could cope if they had to right now no other kingdoms really proved a threat to them besides the Han, and for the moment wu was happy kissing its ass If only to keep them away from the Southlands

Shortly after the troops that were not on guard shuffled in one by one as they were forced to come with her so they should get something out of deal right. “Ah hope you like it, Captain, my maids are just as good at cooking as they are with protecting me.”

To Yuuji it was seemed a little naïve even if it was sweet the way Lady Ren thought she could eliminate the corruption as soon as it spread here. Then again of course he had seen it a lot closer up and for a lot longer than she had. It was a poison that had no cure, a disease that no one was able to treat. Not that no one had tried, for they most certainly had. The Emperor’s father in law Dou Wu who had been the lands most important official and Chen Fan who had once been grand commandant and then the Emperor Ling’s personal tutor. Even they had failed to stop the corruption, trying to remove the ten eunuchs and what had it gotten then…execution. Many others had tried since and all failed. As skilled officials fled the court and the eunuchs sold the empty titles to anyone who had the coin. Yeah it had been tried before, yet she thought she could prevent it infecting the south. Yuuji honestly doubted it would be as easy as that, if anything she underestimated just how bad things really were. Of course Yuuji was something of a pessimist, always looking for the worst case, in his line of work it kept him alive.

“There are plenty of good people in the capital still my lady, I happen to know many of them, however their voices are ignored. I have heard people even generals admit the truth; the Emperor only listens to the 10 attendants these days.” Although privately Yuuji wasn’t sure he himself could be counted among the good people. At the end of the day he told himself what he did was for the good of the nation but no matter the justification there was still blood dripping from his hands.

Fortunately, the food soon arrived, so Yuuji’s mood brightened up just a bit as he accepted a plate. “My thanks.” Yuuji said as a maid handed him something to eat. He was not exactly a picky eater, having been raised in a food poor environment but even he knew good food when he tasted it. “Delicious.” He said as he took another bite.

“I suppose you could say that your highness although I have not lived here since I was ten years old.” Yuuji told her, not going into the details of why exactly he had left. It wasn’t like he could not talk about it; he just didn’t see any need to casually reopen old wounds.

As they ate the Princess described how she had started learning to fight as soon as she had been able too. That made sense given her upbringing her father no doubt could have afforded the best teachers for his daughter. No doubt it had been her choice to learn how to fight. He could not say he had really ‘chosen’ this life for himself as much as it had been ‘chosen’ for him instead. “Very important skills to learn in these troubled times. My master once gave me these words of wisdom. If you want to protect others, first protect yourself. Now you can protect the people you watch over.” He said.

But let’s just hope the ten advisers he listens to keep him on the right path; if not the next time we meet could be on the field of the battle Captain.

Xian feared that one day she might find herself in battle with friends and even family. But it is highly unlikely that she would abandon her brothers and end up fighting them, as she loved them far too much to raise her bow to her. But who knows what might happen she had seen friends become enemies and just because she is a princess does not mean she is immune to this world.

“Very important skills to learn in these troubled times. My master once gave me these words of wisdom. If you want to protect others, first protect yourself. Now you can protect the people you watch over.” “Wise words indeed. So if you don’t mind me asking tell me more about your childhood, after all we both southern born so in some respect we share the same love for the homeland so to speak.

Honestly Yuuji was a little concerned that he might one day end up fighting against this women himself, while she a bit bossy he actually found he liked her because of that. She reminded him a lot of Liu Ye and while that women had caused him plenty of trouble they were still close. So the idea he one day have to fight against her was...not appealing. Not that he was the type to ride out and challenge his enemies to battle anyway, it was a some what different scenario he was afraid of. If the cards fell the wrong way the Sun clan fell out of favor with the court well, anything could happen. Perhaps a letter would be delivered too him one day ordering him to assassinate Sun Quan or even Sun Ren herself. They were important nobles it could happen. Then he might find himself stalking her looking for the right place and time to fire the arrow that would end her life as he was so talented at doing. He really hoped it would never come to that but, the world was a pretty sick place some times especially in times as turbulent as these. Especially with the 10 in charge of the capital, they seemed to be sinking their corrupting influence even into his own organization.

"It would be nice if things could quieten down in the capital and stability could return but in my admittedly some what limited experience, these things tend to get worse rather than better. Like leaving a cancer untreated it can only grow. Honestly i don't think their is anyone in the capital qualified to treat this illness." He spoke honestly about something that had long concerned him. He saw just a fraction of what really happened of course but the sort of orders he received indicated what was going on at the top, since they were the only ones who could chose his targets. The fact they wanted him to execute a random rebel leader like this, so far from the capital, well the job stank. It seemed more like a personal vendetta by one of the 10 than a legitimate mission for the national good.

Yuuji was a little taken aback however when she asked him about his childhood, it was a topic he didn't exactly love to go over, it had been traumatic to say least but that was not exactly unique in these times. Still it wasn't a taboo topic either even if he didn't enjoy digging into old wounds. He decided to tell her a little about his past. "My love for this land may be some what diminished by my circumstances. I was born in Lu Kou, i'm sure you know it an important naval town on the Chang Jiang river. I lived their until i was 10 years old, not bad years all things considered, i had a family my parents and my sister. And the local governors daughter was kind to me as well, even when no one else was." Yuuji said painting the picture of his past rather more brightly than was in fact the case. Not because he felt the need to deceive her as much as he just didn't want to see that look in pity in her eyes that he always got when people learned the truth. Besides as the daughter of this land's ruler she would probably prefer happier white lie to the truth right?
